LECTURE SERIES — “Green & Growing”
Saturday+Sunday, August 27+28 • 11am-5pm
at the The Independent 600 Ortiz - 4th Floor

Sand City, a complex mix of commerce and culture, has cultivated a unique group of innovative thinkers and doers. These creative minds will come together at this event to showcase the new, green concepts being formulated and put to use in the redevelopment of Sand City as a mixed use community and ways individuals can go green, too. These lectures are free to the public.

Saturday—Day 1 ‘Building Green’
     
11:00-noon   Creegan & D’Angelo Infrastructure Engineers to discuss the City’s Desalination Plant
     
12:00-1:00   Paul Kephart of Rana Creek will discuss Monterey Bay Shores Ecoresort, designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification
     
1:00-2:00   Don Orosco will discuss the sustainability initiatives that The Orosco Group incorporated into   the Edgewater Shopping Center a decade before ‘green’ was in vogue
     
2:00-3:00   Christina Watson with the Transportation Agency of Monterey County will discuss alternative transportation options including projects in Sand City
     
3:00-4:00   Sharon Sarris, founder & co-facilitator of the Monterey Bay EV Alliance (MBEVA) will discuss the EV Charging stations to be installed at The Independent
     
4:00-5:00   Patrick Daly of Woods Bagot Architects will present the sustainable aspects of walkable, vertically mixed use communities and green attributes of The Independent
     
Sunday—Day 2 ‘Living Green’
     
11:00-noon   Cindy Walter, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council Member and owner of Passionfish, will offer sustainable living guidelines
     
12:00-1:00   Tanja Roos Organic Garden Program Director at MEarth Habitat will discuss the value of sustainability education and the role of school gardens in the movement
     
1:00-2:00   John Ramirez, Director of Environmental Health will present Monterey County’s Green Business  Program which recognizes businesses for conserving resources, preventing pollution and minimizing waste
     
2:00-3:00   Kristin Cushman of The Offset Project will discuss options to offset one’s carbon footprint
     
3:00-4:00   Michael Waxer, AIA, LEED, Vice President of Carmel Development and Founder of “Step Up to Green” program will explain how it helps homeowners increase energy and water efficiency
     
4:00-5:00   Max Perelman of BuildingWise presents ways to upgrade buildings to improve performance and reduce environmental impact
